Eco Friendly Clothes Go Mainstream

Trend-setting, clothes-conscious women throughout the world are going green. Now that lots of major figures in the world of fashion design are going along, being green is not equal to being dowdy anymore. Reusable clothes are really in nowadays, from workout wear to work outfits.

You might be wondering what is means for your clothes to be eco-friendly. Environmentally conscious clothing is often made from natural and fair-trade materials like soy, organic cotton and bamboo. The benefits of organic cotton are that it's not grown with pesticides while non-organic cotton uses more pesticides than any other crop. It takes 1/3 lb of chemicals to make one T-shirt. Fair-trade simply means paying fair wages to the individuals that make the clothing that we love to wear.

Sustainable clothing is very comfortable and materials like organic cotton feel so much better against the skin than prickly polyester does. Cutting edge designers like Portland's Ryan Christensen are using eco-friendly fabrics for clothing that doesn't exploit the planet. Christensen is the founder of Sameunderneath, a company that produces eclectic pieces like trendy, sleek garments that are made from bamboo.

Nau, which was founded by Eric Reynolds in 2005, is working to bring luxury to more environmentally-friendly customers. Nau is run by a group of 35 industry professionals, including Nike, Patagonia, The North Face and Adidas. The group has made more luxurious outdoor clothing, including underwear, base layers, fleece insulation, soft and hard shell pants and jackets. What is impressive about Nau is where the fabrics used are obtained from. To help the environment, Nau uses fabrics from recycled materials such as soda bottles, organic cotton and biopolymer fabrics. PLA, one such biopolymer fabric, is made from corn and very versatile.

No one denies that there is so much more to come. Designers still don't have all the materials that they need to keep up with their less sustainable counterparts but with so many new ideas floating around, there's no doubt that this is an exciting industry to be in right now.

Consumers are beginning to pay attention to where all of their purchased products are produced; therefore designers will start to become pickier. It won't be long before the style-conscious are also eco-conscious.
